Sharon loves collecting and playing with wool varieties from around the world. Each breed of sheep brings unique qualities to the wool, with some, like Merino, soft as butter and used for delicate pieces and exceptional for felting fine items, and others, like Icelandic, that are coarse, superstrong and often used for carpets and rugs.

Evidence has been found showing domestication of sheep and clothing made from wool as far back as 20 000 years ago in Central Asia. There are now over 1000 sheep breeds worldwide making sheep the animal with more registered breeds than any other livestock species. See our page on Wool Trivia for more of wool’s fascinating story.
