Chaotic Fibres news for fibre lovers

Our Online Store is open again after our exciting trip through Asia to the Mediterranean and on to England – visiting 23 cities in 16 countries! It was a fabulous trip that took us to so many regions and cities that were new to us, with great highlights like seeing Petra in Jordan, spending time in Singapore and Shanghai, transiting the security vigilant Suez Canal and much more.

Now it’s time to restock, so Sharon has ordered all kinds of fibre – needles and pads for wet felting, ball brausers, Sari Silk Waste, Silk Hankies, prefelt, seven new custom blends created especially for Chaotic, twenty-seven colours of Viscose Top and more. Watch Chaotic Fibre’s online store as we highlight the new fibres, blends and tools from this order.

Our next fibre event: 100 Mile Fleece and Fibre Fair in Coombs on May 26th. This annual event is organized by the Bradley Spinners as a way of helping suppliers and local farmers connect to fibre artists from across Vancouver Island. This will be our fourth year being involved in this event and we always have a terrific day. Come for the fibre and stay for the connections and inspiration!

Season’s Greetings from Chaotic Fibres

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas season! The recent snow and cold here on Vancouver Island reminds us of our years living in climates where a real Canadian winter brought days of crystal gleaming snow before slush and banks of melting ice relieved us of our winter reveries. In the meantime, it feels more like Christmas with snow around us. We hope you have a memorable time over the busy weeks ahead!

Our second annual studio sale on November 19th and 20th was a great success. Thank you to all who ventured to our home studio for this event. This year’s door prize was won by JoAnne L. Have fun with that eclectic collection of fibres, JoAnne!

silk hankies for felting and spinning online store Chaotic FibresIt’s time to stock up again and we are waiting for a few new items that are already sparking some interest with Chaotic customers. Have you tried using Silk Hankies? The patience required for creating these 25cm square bits of silk splendor is amazing. Silk cocoons are carefully soaked and spread on a frame then dried to become a sheet of gossamer thin silk that is ready for spinning, felting or knitting. Acid dyes take nicely if you dye them yourself, but we are about to receive seven colours, including black, for those of you who prefer to have hankies already dyed.

Also coming to our Online Store soon is luxurious Cashmere Top in both Natural Grey and Natural White. Our superfine Cashmere (13 micron) is perfect for spinning and felting. Blend it with some silk and fine merino and watch this low lustre beauty add exceptional character to your work!

Black viscose fibre spinning and felting from Chaotic Fibres, Victoria BCSpeaking of soft, another new fibre coming is viscose. We’ll be offering both Viscose Fibre, in both white and black for spinners and felters, and Viscose Crepe Voile, a 140cm wide fabric for felters. Produced from wood fibre, viscose was seen as a replacement for silk when it was first developed 100 years ago. It’s a strong but soft and light fibre.

Our next fibre event is set for Saturday, February 18th here in Victoria. This one day event, Spin In, is sponsored by the Victoria Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild (VHWSG) and will take place at the Saanich Fairgrounds. This will be our third time attending and, as in previous years, the vendors’ area is open to the public and separate from the spinning rooms. Come and see us!

We are also scheduled for Fibres West in Cloverdale on Friday, March 17th and Saturday the 18th, once again, this time with a double booth. If you’ve never attended this event, have a look at the list of classes, instructors and lectures and consider making this a highlight of your year!

Chaotic Fibres New Stock Soon!

Our hats are off to Michelle, Leola and their team of volunteers for last weekend’s successful Cowichan Fleece and Fibre Festival in Cobble Hill. We had a terrific time and we look forward to returning next year for this annual, Vancouver Island event. It’s always interesting to look back at which fibres were most in demand at events like this. We found our Merino/Suri Alpaca Top and Merino 19m Top were definitely the best sellers, followed by Pulled Sari Silk and the always-fun Silk Carrier Rods for felters and jewelry makers.

FibresWest2016Speaking of returning, we have just registered for Fibres West 2016 in Vancouver. This will be the eighth annual festival and our second time there as vendors. Fibres West will be at the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds on March 18th and 19th.

Sharon has been busy restocking and updating inventory for our Online Store after the weekend’s sale. Orders have been placed and we have shipments arriving soon from Europe, Britain and across North America. We’re looking forward to some new items as well as popular fibres that have completely sold out.

Bonsai Sprayer from Chaotic FibresFor felters, our popular Bonsai Sprayers, Felting Needles and Felting Pads will arrive shortly. Sharon also ordered Merino/Silk Prefelt in white and black for our nuno felters. Have you been looking for white merino for dyeing? We’ll soon have more Italian Merino 19m in white. Other fibres coming soon include: Merino Gotland Fleece in blue grey; five new colours of Merino Top coming from South America and Australia; eight colours of Sharon’s favourite fibre, Pulled Sari Silk; and twelve colours of Tussah Silk Top. In addition to this bounty of lusciousness, she also just received a shipment of Silk Hankies, Thrown Silk in Sericin, Cocoon Strippings and Carded Mulberry Noil. Lots of goodies to tempt our spinners and feltmakers! Thank goodness we now have room to spare in Sharon’s studio and the Chaotic Fibres area of our new home!

For those who look forward to seeing us at fibre events, we’ll be at Fibres West in March and, hopefully, VHWSG’s Spin In on Saturday, February 27th.

Store shelves are piling up!

Our online store shelves are piling up as we receive shipments from across North America and from Europe. It’s exciting and busy as we open packages and work at loading the items on our yet-to-go-live online store. Yes, we’re hard at work learning how to best organize and present the catalogue of wool, silk and other fibres! Love the sari silk fibre and dozen colours of pulled sari silk we received the other day. The merino colours are so vibrant as well. This shipment also included colourful silk noils and some bleached silk hankies … and so much more!
